Speaker Bio:

Dr. Bin Fan is the founding member of Alluxio, Inc. and the PMC member of Alluxio open source project. Prior to Alluxio, he worked at Google to build the next-generation storage infrastructure and won Google's Technical Infrastructure award. Bin received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University on the design and implementation of distributed systems. He is the author of cuckoo filter, memC3 and etc, with multiple US patents and publications in top academic conferences including SIGCOMM, SOSP, NSDI.

Webinar Summary:

In this talk, Bin shared his experience in the past decade working in the space of distributed systems from research at Carnegie Mellon University to data infrastructure engineering at Google and Alluxio. Topics include:

  • How the big data stack is evolving over the past decades, from academic papers published by Google on GFS, Bigtable and MapReduce in early 2000, to a complex ecosystems with popular open source data frameworks such as Apache Spark, Presto, Hive on the structured data as well as TensorFlow and Caffe on AI/ML.

  • How to handle the increasing demand of data analytics request due to the rise of AI, ML, Neural Networks?

  • How advanced data engineering is flourishing the industries like Banking, Technology, Healthcare, Consumer and Automotive.

  • The difference between working on research problems in universities, working in the data platform in well-established companies like Google vs. startup on open source.
